Migs Oczon and Gaige Prim celebrate after Ulsan kept Seoul Samsun winless. KBL |
MANILA--Migs Oczon and the rest of the Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus kept the tragic start of Justin Gutang and the Seoul Samsung Thunders going in the KBL after an 83-80 overtime win on Thursday night at the Jamsil Arena in the South Korean capital.
Back-to-back baskets from Lee Woo-Suk and Ham Ji-Hoon set the tone for Ulsan's offense in overtime even as the team's defense held Seoul Samsung scoreless in the first three minutes of the extension.
The Thunders tried to stay in the game, but Oczon fished an offensive foul on Lee Jung-Hyun, eventually leading to a Kim Gook-Chan layup with 54.5 seconds left that essentially iced the ball game for the Phoebus
Gaige Prim led Ulsan, who moved up to a tie for second with the Daegu featuring SJ Belangel and Andrew Nicholson at 3-1, with 21 points, going 2-for-2 from deep, six rebounds, four assists, and one steal, while Lee added 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
The Pegasus were fresh from a 97-64 blowout win on Wednesday night against the Anyang Red Boosters that saw Nicholson, the former Bay Area Dragons import, scoring 20 points, Belangel adding seven, and Javi Gomez De Liano being held to only two points without a field goal.
Kofi Cockburn put up 23 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, and one block for Seoul Samsung, who fell to 0-6.
Despite going 0-for-7 from three-point range, Oczon got the better of Gutang in the battle between former College of St. Benilde standouts as Oczon finished with seven points, four rebounds, and five assists and Gutang only had three points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
The other game for the night saw Suwon handing Goyang its first loss of the season with a 69-61 road win at the Goyang Sono Arena.
