MANILA—The wrath of severe tropical storm "Kristine" forced the Asian Football Confederation to call off its scheduled AFC Champions League 2 clash between Kaya Iloilo and Hong Kong Eastern on Thursday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The torrential rains brought about by the cyclone drenched the pitch so much that the local organizing committee had no other recourse but to push it to another day.
Barring strong rains that could keep Rizal Memorial too flooded, the match has been moved to 12 noon on Friday.
In hopes that the weather would become better, Kaya Iloilo announced on Wednesday night that it was pushing through with the match even if the UAAP already postponed its scheduled football clashes.
However, the strong rains forced the AFC to first move the opening kickoff, initially scheduled for 8 p.m., to 8:30 p.m. and then later to 9 p.m. before deciding the pitch was too unplayable.
PAGASA already raised a red rainfall warning in Metro Manila, which means the heavy rains will continue for at least the next three hours even if the province has been downgraded to Signal No. 1.
