DASMARINAS--Lazy Esports dethroned RRQ Kaito as the MDL Philippines champion after a masterful play right in the final game of the best-of-seven series decided their online showdown on Sunday night.
Lazy let RRQ Kaito capture the Lord in the last "Lord dance" only for Jerry "Chovskrt" Nicol's Luo Yi to launch his Diversion for his teammates to be teleported to RRQ Kaito's wide-open base.
With Jefferdson "Kkdot" Mogol sacrificing his Ruby for Kelvin Chen, Chen's Hayabusa could not make it in time to help his RRQ Kaito teammates defend their base as Lazy was successful in their diversion play toward its opponent's base.
"Grabe yung laro namin. Di namin in-expect na ganun ang nangyari," said Lazy head coach Jaime Abalos.
James Mendoza, the regular season MVP for Season 4, was named Finals MVP for his brilliant play as a jungle player.
"First time kong may ganitong experience," Mendoza, who went 9-0-3 as Ling in Game 7, said as he turned emotional.
Lazy became the first independent team, that is, a club without any affiliation with an MPL team worldwide, to rule MDL PH and the third different champion after Echo Proud, whose franchise was absorbed by Team Liquid Academy Philippines, scored the 2023 double by winning the first two seasons and RRQ Kaito completed a historic perfect run to rule Season 3 earlier this year.
Lazy essentially denied RRQ Kaito of completing a calendar year "grand slam", leaving PVL powerhouse Creamline as the only professional team to win all the championships on the line in 2024.
