MANILA––On Monday night, Converge, which is a de facto Charles Tiu-led team, fought back from 28 points down to stun San Miguel in the PBA Governors' Cup quarterfinals on a game-winner.
The day later, though, the College of St. Benilde, with Tiu officially listed as head coach, was facing a major collapse from 26 up.
However, a game-winner from a returning player saved the day.
In his return to action, Jhomel Ancheta nailed the winning shot as the Blazers escaped the San Sebastian Golden Stags, 96-94, in their NCAA men's basketball duel on Tuesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
In his only field goal of the game, Ancheta drove through the open lane and converted a layup with 3.3 seconds left that broke a 94-all tie.
Raymart Escobido, who was red hot, found himself wide open from the left corner, but he missed the buzzer-beating three that could have completed the comeback for San Sebastian.
Tony Ynot led the Blazers, who survived despite committing 31 turnovers, with 23 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and one steal.
Allen Liwag added 17 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and one block as they remained at number one in the standings at 6-1.
Escobido finished with a career-high 29 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block, while Paeng Are added 20 points, two rebounds, three assists, and seven steals for the Golden Stags, which dropped to 2-6.
