MANILA—With intense football witnessed by almost 1,500 fans in attendance, the Philippines hosted Myanmar in their first match of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 which ended in a 1-1 conclusion at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on Thursday night.

As Myanmar lost only through an own goal versus a young Indonesian squad, the Burmese Lions were eager to clean everything to remain as survivors for the semifinal ticket.

Numerous attempts were launched by the Philippines but nothing was found in the net, not until the 25th minute when Myanmar was awarded a free kick.

Maung Maung Lwin successfully converted from just outside the box to stagger Patrick Deyto and put Myanmar ahead.

In the 2nd half, the advantage was still possessed by the Burmese until they thought they doubled their lead in the 63rd minute.

However, the supposed dagger by Yint Aung Ye was nullified by the VAR after a successful challenge specifying an offside call.

A short scrimmage in the 70th minute that saw goalie Zin Nyi Nyi Aung fouling a blue shirt who had been freed triggered the referee to blow his whistle and decided to give a penalty to the Philippines after a long discussion.

Bjorn Kristensen was selected for the spot kick as he put the ball in the goalmouth in the 72nd minute to record his third international goal on his national kit to give the Philippines a revival in the match.

In the last 10 additional minutes of the game, Nyi Aung played well in his vital presence as he saved two important attempts from Javier Mariona and Zico Bailey to settle the draw in Manila.

Albert Capellas, the national tactician for the PMNFT, stated in the post-match conference that their performance was a "disappointment" as reflected in missing too many chances in their offensive attacks as the Philippines dominated the stat sheet, recording 23 shot attempts, eight on target, compared to Myanmar's seven shots with four on target.

With that, the Philippines started off its AMEC 2024 campaign with a point shared with Myanmar in their column.

The PMNFT will fly to Vientiane for their second match of the biennial tournament against Laos on the night of Dec. 15.
