MANILA--The two main figures in the University of the Philippines' last two UAAP title runs faced off on Monday night with Carl Tamayo getting the last laugh over JD Cagulangan in a 78-70 Changwon win against Suwon in their KBL clash at the Suwon KT Sonicboom Arena.
Although he struggled after two consecutive 30-point blasts this time, Tamayo showed that he, too, can be effective in crunch time, nailing a fallaway jumper with 1:21 left that iced the game for the Sakers.
Darryl Monroe led Changwon, which overtook Suwon for fourth place at 16-13, with 18 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, and one steal.
Yang Jun-Seok added 16 points, two rebounds, six assists, and one steal, while Tamayo finished with eight points, five rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Ismael Romero put up 18 points on a perfect 8-for-8 shooting on two-pointers, nine rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while Cagulangan had eight points on 4-for-8 from the field, one rebound, and three assists for the Sonicboom, who fell to 15-13.
Meanwhile, Seoul Samsung continued its solid midseason run with an 81-69 win against Busan at the latter's home, the Sajik Arena.
The Thunders quickly shut the lights out of the Egis by outscoring them, 23-11, in the first quarter and never looked back from there, although Busan had a strong finish to the game despite the outcome already settled.
Kofi Cockburn led Seoul Samsung, which moved up to 11-17, now a half-game behind 12-17 Busan for seventh place and two games behind Wonju for sixth place, with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and eight rebounds,
Justin Gutang and Lee Won-Seok added 12 points each on impressive shooting clips, with Gutang going 4-for-4 from inside the arc and Lee going 6-for-7 overall from the field.
Caddy Lalanne scored 13 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and two blocks for the Egis in a game in which they decided not to suit up Calvin Epistola.
