SGA says a foul should have been called on Mokhtar Ghayaza in this crucial play. SGA |
MANILA—Strong Group Athletics will not suit up in the Dubai International Basketball Championship third place game as the team accused the referees that officiated their semifinal game against Tunisia of being spotty.
"We at Strong Group Athletics have officially decided not to participate in the third-place game of the 34th Dubai Basketball International Championship, as we call for equality and fairness in officiating and for the game to be treated with the proper respect. Our decision comes after our semifinal matchup against Tunisia on Saturday evening (early Sunday, Philippine Time), where we encountered officiating inconsistencies that significantly impacted the outcome of the contest," SGA said in a statement early Sunday, about an hour and a half after their now controversial loss to Tunisia.
SGA then claimed "multiple non-calls were made against us, with crucial decisions favoring Tunisia," the most crucial of which was when they thought the referees should have called a foul on Mokhtar Ghayaza while trying to block Rhenz Abando's three-pointer from behind with 4.4 seconds left in the game.
Based on the live broadcast, it looked like Ghayaza bumped Abando at the back during the said play, but the referees just let the play go on to the dismay of SGA.
The team's decision not to show up later Sunday is its protest for the DIBC to improve its officiating.
"As competitors, we respect the game and its governing principles. However, fairness and accountability are fundamental in maintaining the integrity of international basketball. Our decision not to play in the third-place match is not just about one game—it is about advocating for officiating that upholds the spirit of sportsmanship and ensures that all teams are given a fair chance to compete," the statement further said.
SGA concluded, "We extend our gratitude to our supporters and assure our fans that despite this unfortunate outcome, we remain committed to representing the Philippines with pride on the global stage."
With the development, the United Arab Emirates will be given third place literally without breaking a sweat, leaving only Tunisia to play in the final night of the DIBC against Beirut First for the title.
