MANILA--Wonju put up a brilliant performance in the first half and eventually held on against Daegu for an 89-80 win in their KBL battle on Thursday night at the Wonju Gymnasium.
The Promy raced to a 50-34 lead at halftime and kept the Pegasus at bay the rest of the way, although the latter finished the game with five straight points to cut the final margin to a more respectable one.
Omari Spellman, a former teammate of Rhenz Abando at Anyang, led Wonju, now 2-0 since signing him and 18-21 overall, with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting including 6-of-7 from inside the arc, nine rebounds, four assists, one block, and one steal.
Ethan Alvano also went 6-for-7 on twos and finished with 20 points alongside two rebounds, seven assists, and two steals.
Andrew Nicholson put up 23 points on 4-of-6 shooting from deep, eight rebounds, and two assists, while SJ Belangel added 14 points, one rebounds, five assists, and three steals for Daegu, which fell to 20-18.
Meanwhile, Carl Tamayo had a quiet outing in his KBL return from Gilas Pilipinas duties, but Changwon still prevailed over Seoul Samsung, 74-62, at the Changwon Gymnasium.
The Sakers pulled away in the second and third quarters after the Thunders started the game strong, outscoring them 39-15.
Assem Marei led Changwon, which moved up to solo second place at 25-14, with 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
Heo Il-Young added 12 points, eight rebounds, and one assist, while Tamayo made four points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Lee Won-Seok put up 16 points, three rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block for Seoul Samsung, which failed to overtake Goyang and remained in last place at 12-26.
Former Magnolia import Tre Robinson made 12 points, five rebounds, and one block in his KBL debut, while Justin Gutang had eight points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
