QUEZON CITY--Have we just seen the last of Shinya Aoki's illustrious career at ONE Championship?
When referee Herb Dean formally announced Aoki's win against longtime rival Eduard Folayang at ONE 172 on Sunday night at the Saitama Super Arena, fans quickly noticed that Aoki took off his gloves and laid them on the canvas, a usual sign that a combat sports athlete could be announcing his retirement right after the match.
When commentator Mitch Chilson asked about it, an emotional Aoki said in Japanese, "Later, I would like to make an official announcement."
If ever this is indeed the Japanese mixed martial arts superstar's swan song, he is leaving the sport in style.
The 41-year-old veteran needed only 41 seconds to beat Folayang in the fourth and potentially the final chapter of their rivalry.
Aoki quickly sent Folayang to the floor with an armbar attempt, and just as the former completed the grapple hold, Folayang had no other recourse but to tap out.
Aoki moved up to 49-11 in his career, scoring his 32nd submission win, and he could be ending his MMA stint with back-to-back victories.
Folayang, on the other hand, dropped to 23-14, falling for the sixth time in his last seven bouts.
