MANILA--Pampanga needed a grindout in the end to open its bid for a third consecutive MPBL national title with a 79-74 win against Imus on Thursday night at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay.
In a high-scoring fourth quarter, the Giant Lanterns turned to their defense late to hold off the Brotherhood, keeping them scoreless in the final 1:37 of the game even as they finished the game with five straight points that broke a 74-all tie.
Raymond Binuya led Pampanga with 14 points, three rebounds, five assists, and one steal, while Archie Concepcion, Chris Lalata, and Renz Palma each added 12 markers with Lalata also grabbing 12 rebounds.
JJ Caspe led Imus, which fell to 1-1, with 19 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
