MANILA--Family's Brand Sardines is now setting its sights on joining the PBA's prestigious five-on-five cagefest.
Commissioner Willie Marcial confirmed on Sunday night that the food brand owned by Anita Kaw is aiming to join the league after talking to Kaw's son Tippy during the league's Zamboanga City stop on Saturday night between Magnolia and Phoenix at the Vitaliano Agan Coliseum.
"Tignan natin. Baka lang, pero nag-usap kami. Matagal kaming nag-usap regarding the PBA," Marcial said when asked by reporters during the Sunday twinbill at the Ynares Center 1 in Antipolo.
He then revealed Family's Brand has been trying to enter the league for more than a decade already.
"Si Ms. Anita Kaw mismo ang kausap ko. Nanonood sila ng PBA noon," Marcial bared how the initial talks with Family's Brand during the early 2010s went.
Despite revealing Family's Brand's interest, he declined to confirm if the company is among the three corporate groups looking to buy the Terrafirma franchise following its fallout with Starhorse.
Family's Brand has been backing the Zamboanga franchise in the MPBL, currently known as the SiKat, since it was founded during the regional league's second season in the 2018-2019 fiscal calendar.
Family's Brand also found its way into the 3x3 scene, first in the 2020 Pilipinas 3x3 bubble season in Calamba City, absorbing the entire team playing in the international circuit as Manila Chooks at that time, and later in the defunct PBA 3x3 as Master Sardines.
It was also revealed that Family's Brand had an inside track on buying the Alaska franchise back in 2022 before the PBA board approved Converge's offer.
