MANILA—From dreams to destiny, women’s basketball in the Philippines just took its biggest leap yet.
The Women's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL) has officially transitioned into a professional league, marking a historic milestone for women’s basketball in the country.
The announcement, made via the league’s official social media platforms, comes after the success of its inaugural season, which saw the Pilipinas Aguilas emerge as the first-ever champions.
“Women basketball athletes dreamed for a platform where they could continue pursuing their passion for the game,” the league said in its statement.
“Today, that dream is becoming a reality—not just for them, but for little girls who see a future in the sport they love.”
As part of the next phase, which begins in June, the league is calling on interested teams to be part of its professional chapter.
