MANILA--EJ Obiena had a successful homecoming on Tuesday night as he ruled the first PATAFA Pole Vault Challenge at the Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus.

Playing in the Philippines for the first time since the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Capas, Obiena, despite dealing with the rainy weather, set a new season-best in the outdoor circuit by clearing 5.8 meters.

The height was more than enough to beat Chinese Taipei's Wu Yan-Han and another Filipino pole vaulter in Hokett Delos Santos, who could only soar to 5.15 meters.

Wu won the countback tiebreaker over Delos Santos to capture the silver.

"[I'm] happy to jump a new SB at my home track," said Obiena, who set up a training camp in Vermosa ahead of two legs of the Wanda Diamond League in China.
