LAOAG--The National Capital Region and CALABARZON took an early blitz as medals began to be handed in the ongoing Palarong Pambansa here.
As of 9:41 p.m. Monday, the young athletes of NCR amassed 13 golds, eight silvers, and three bronzes, while CALABARZON came in second with 11 golds, nine silvers, and six bronzes as both regions already look poised to go after the overall championship.
Western Visayas is third with a 6-5-3 medal tally, while Northern Mindanao is fourth with a 3-6-5 record.
Eastern Visayas, who drew first blood in the competition through Chrisia Tajarros' win in the girls' secondary 3,000-meter race, is fifth with a 3-2-3 tally.
Tajarros, a Grade 8 sprinter, delivered the first recorded gold for the 2025 edition of Palarong Pambansa by clocking in at 10:18.6 to rule the three-kilometer run.
The product of the Tanauan National High School in Leyte won it all one year after settling for the silver medal in Cebu City.
Also scoring golds already after Day 1 are Bicol (also with three golds), CARAGA, Davao Region (two each), SOCSKSARGEN, MIMAROPA, and Central Luzon (one each).
Host region Ilocos also struck gold already in Day 1 as Urdaneta native Elyson Gangat won the elementary boys pommel horse event.
Gangat had a field day on Monday as the star gymnast of the Urdaneta City SPED Center also won silvers in the floor exercise and the individual all-around.
Also getting podium finishes already after Day 1 are Central Visayas (two silvers and four bronzes), Zamboanga Peninsula (one silver and one bronze), Cagayan Valley, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (one bronze each).
On the other hand, athletes from the Cordillera Administrative Region, National Academy of Sports, and Philippine schools overseas look to finally win medals as Day 2 commences on Tuesday.
