QUEZON CITY--Charly Suarez may have gotten a crucial advantage in his quest to become the next Filipino world boxing champion.

Reigning WBO junior welterweight champion Emanuel Navarrete struggled to make weight one day before he clashes with Suarez for the said title belt.

During the official weigh-in event on Saturday (Philippine Time) in San Diego, Navarrete weighed 130.4 pounds, almost half a pound over the limit.

The Mexican star stripped his boxer briefs in hopes that it was enough excess weight, but only 0.1 pound was shed.

Navarrete's camp was given two hours to shed off at least 0.3 pound, but they gave it two more tries after barely 40 minutes, only to see just 0.1 pound lost.

Another 40 minutes had passed, and Navarrete, after some exhaling, got it on the sixth try.

Suarez easily passed the weighing test on the first attempt, officially coming in at 129.9 pounds.

On what kind of Emanuel Navarrete would show up on Sunday (Philippine Time) when he and Suarez collide for the former's 130-pound division belt remains to be seen.

Oftentimes, though, boxers who initially miss weight during the official weigh-in but still eventually make weight afterward seem to be a bit gassed on fight night itself, something Suarez should take advantage of.
