MANILA--Scottie Thompson just wrote a page in the PBA history book thanks to his prowess as a rebounder.
Right before the final buzzer for the third quarter, Thompson grabbed two offensive rebounds in hopes to further swell what had been a huge lead already for Ginebra against TNT on Sunday night at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Although he failed to score a putback in time, Thompson still did enough to secure his 1,000th offensive rebound as confirmed by PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon.
He also added that Thompson became the first player in league history to achieve four career milestones in the same season.
Before Thompson's historic moment, the most career milestones in one year was that of fellow PBA Greatest Players member Yoyoy Villamin, who had three in 1989.
Thompson's record breaker stint actually began against the Tropang 5G as well when he entered the 2,000 Defensive Rebounds Club in Game 4 of the Governors' Cup Finals on Nov. 3.
A month later, Thompson dished out his 2,000th career assist against Terrafirma, and on May 23 this year, he snatched his 500th career steal against Blackwater.
What makes Thompson's milestone more significant is that the six-foot-one playmaker is the only guard among active players to enter the 1,000 Offensive Rebounds Club.
He is also the first Gin Kings guard to do so and sixth overall after Sonny Cabatu, Eric Menk, Rudy Hatfield, Enrico Villanueva, and Japeth Aguilar.
Thompson also became the 56th player in league history to collect 1,000 offensive rebounds or more and 54th among locals.
According to Mangonon, Thompson will be formally given his fourth career achievement award next Sunday at halftime of Ginebra's crucial game against Rain Or Shine to end the PBA Philippine Cup eliminations.
