QUEZON CITY--Basilan called for a "fair review" of the MPBL's ruling to suspend Arwind Santos indefinitely for his role in an in-game commotion in Game 2 of the South Division quarterfinals against GenSan.

In a statement on Thursday, the Portmasters believe that certain actions from Tonton Bringas, which triggered Santos to hit him in the face in the fourth quarter of their Monday night showdown, were overlooked in the league's decision.

"While we respect the league's authority, we believe the sanctions imposed deserve a fair review. Prior to the incident, Arwind was subjected to repeated unsportsmanlike actions from Mr. Anthony Bringas. These were left unaddressed by officials, thus escalating the situation," Basilan said.

The team also confirmed that the former PBA MVP has already reached out to his fellow Far Eastern University alumnus to settle things amicably, "but was referred to legal counsel."

"We urge the league to reexamine the imposed sanctions and to also review the conduct of Mr. Bringas and the officiating team. We call for shared accountability among players, teams, and officials," the Portmasters further stated.

The statement concluded by saying, "We continue to advocate for a playing environment that's fair, safe, and consistent for everyone."

Santos will miss the rubber match of the best-of-three Round of 16 tie between GenSan and Basilan on Friday night at the Olivarez College Coliseum in Paranaque.

The extent of the suspension, though, could open a chance that the 44-year-old forward, the second overall pick of the 2006 PBA Draft, to call it a career after 19 years of playing professional basketball.
