SAN JUAN, MM––Lyceum continued its last-gasp effort to avoid the play-in for fourth seed with its romping of San Sebastian, 88-74, at Playtime FilOil Centre on Saturday in the NCAA Season 101 men’s basketball tournament.
Following the win, the Pirates leapfrogged over the Golden Stags in Group A with a 3-8 card, all while sending Baste to the bottom of the pack with a 3-9 record.
Lyceum is now just 1.5 games behind third-seed Arellano, which holds a 4-6 slate.
“Malapit na. Kumbaga ‘yong liga malapit ng matapos kaya every game natin panalunin na natin,” coach Gilbert Malabanan said.
“‘Pag nagplay-in [man] tayo, importante na bago kami dumating do’n dapat mataas confidence nila.”
Standing tall atop Group A are still Perpetual Help (8-3) and defending champion Mapua (6-5).
Gyle Montaño came alive at the right time for Lyceum in the dub with a game-high 22 points.
Renz Villegas also chipped in 14 points, six rebounds, and two steals.
Jhuniel Dela Rama showed his prowess once more for Baste with 19 points and seven rebounds, but even his performance wasn’t enough to keep the Stags close to the Pirates.
