Juan beats Javi in 1st PBA GDL battle as Converge nips Magnolia

PASIG--Juan Gomez De Liaño got the better of his Kuya Javi as Converge delivered a 114-97 beatdown of Magnolia at the resumption of the PBA Philippine Cup after the FIBA international break on Friday night at the Ynares Center 1 in Antipolo.

The younger GDL led the FiberXers anew with 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting, 5-of-6 on twos, 4-for-7 on threes, and 1-of-2 on fours, with seven rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block.

It even turned out to be a battle of former University of the Philippines King Maroons as Juan got the last laugh over Zav Lucero, who fired 31 points on 12-of-23 shooting with nine rebounds, two blocks, and one steal to lead the Hotshots.

Converge exploded in the second half, firing 72 points, 36 in each quarter, to steal the win from Magnolia, which had a solid first half.

Alec Stockton added 23 points, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while Balti Baltazar contributed 19 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, one block, and two steals for the FiberXers, who joined the NLEX Road Warriors and Rain Or Shine Elasto Painters in a tie at the top at 6-2.

Javi Gomez De Liaño had a quiet 10 points along with Mark Barroca for the Hotshots, who dropped to 5-3.
