ANTIPOLO--The Philippines ended Day 1 of the Southeast Asian Games with another gold in the bag, coming from swimming.
The team of Kayla Sanchez, Heather White, Xiandi Chua, and Chloe Isleta ruled the 4x100-meter freestyle relay finals to give the Filipino contingent its second SEA Games championship on Wednesday night at the Huamark Sports Complex Aquatic Center in Bangkok.
The Philippine team finished the relay race at 3:44.26, nearly 2.3 seconds faster than the quartet from Singapore, which clocked in at 3:46.53.
Vietnam took the bronze at 3:47.47, denying Thailand, which settled for fourth place at 3:49.17, a medal at its home pool.
The Philippines ended Day 1 with two golds, two silvers, and nine bronzes, good for seventh place in the medal tally.
The Thais already surged ahead with 19 golds, 13 silvers, and nine bronzes, while Indonesia and Singapore won five golds each.
Vietnam is fourth with four golds each, while Myanmar and Malaysia also got two golds each, but just above the Philippines in the medal tally due to more silvers and bronzes.
