TAGUIG CITY -- Following a tough 7-0 loss to eventual finalists Japan, the Filipinas closed their 2026 Women's Asian Cup campaign by securing a ticket to Brazil for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. They emerged victorious over Uzbekistan in the first playoff round at Gold Coast Stadium on Thursday morning (Philippine Time).

Olivia McDaniel was tested early but easily caught an attempt by Mamatkarinova in the 25th minute following a defensive error by the Filipinas.

The first half ended in a 0-0 deadlock despite several solid attempts from the Philippine side.

The team's efforts finally paid off in the 47th minute when Angie Beard scored a crucial goal. Jael Guy found a gap in the paralyzed Uzbek defense, allowing Beard to use her favored left foot to convert the Filipinas' first goal.

Beard, who recently shifted from defense to forward, also had two solid shots on goal in the first half, including a missed attempt from a Charleigh Frilles cross in the 28th minute and a solo effort that was easily gathered by the defense in the 38th minute.

Five minutes after the opening goal, Guy found an unmarked Jaclyn Sawicki, who headed the ball into the Uzbek goal to double the Filipinas' lead to 2-0.

Guy has now recorded two vital assists in this tournament.

McDaniel came up big again in the 75th minute, saving a near-post shot and conceding a corner. She punched the ball clear twice to deny a potential Uzbek comeback.

The 2025 SEA Games gold medalists have now earned their second straight appearance in the Women's World Cup since their debut in 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.

Their previous encounter was an international friendly at Rizal Memorial Stadium in October 2025, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
