TAGUIG CITY -- Tomorrow's clash between Japan and Vietnam will serve as the final acid test for the Filipinas’ hopes of reaching the Final Eight of the 2026 Women's Asian Cup.
This comes after Uzbekistan secured a vital 4-0 victory against Bangladesh on Monday afternoon at Western Sydney Stadium in Sydney, Australia.
The Nadeshiko must win by at least three goals against the 2025 SEA Games silver medalists to reduce Vietnam’s current 0 goal differential to a -3.
A victory of this margin or greater for Japan would pave the way for the Filipinas to carry their three points and -2 differential into the final knockout slot as the last "best third-place" team.
This high-stress scenario follows Uzbekistan officially jumping ahead of the Philippines in the standings. Although both nations share three points and a -2 goal differential, Uzbekistan advances due to the total goals scored tie-breaker (4 vs. 2). All four of Uzbekistan's goals today were their first of the tournament, following scoreless outings against China and North Korea.
As it stands, North Korea, China, and Uzbekistan have solidified their advancement to the quarterfinals. North Korea is set to face Australia, while China awaits the runner-up of Group C. Uzbekistan will face either the Korea Republic or the winner of Group C.
Meanwhile, Vietnam remains in the qualifying zone for now but faces the very real threat of being booted out of the tournament by Japan tomorrow afternoon.
