Gilas girls pull away late to beat Tonga in FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup debut

MANILA--Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 Women took advantage of Tonga fizzling out late to pull away for a 19-10 win at the start of their FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup campaign on Saturday in Singapore.

Gilas had to slug it out with Tonga's size advantage as the latter raced to a 6-4 lead with 6:38 left, but the former pulled away with a 12-1 run that gave them a 16-7 advantage with 2:40 remaining.

Gilas had a chance to secure the 21-point knockout, but Kacey Dela Rosa missed a two-pointer just before time ran out.

Dela Rosa led Gilas with eight points, seven rebounds, and one assist, while Afril Bernardino added six points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting from inside the arc, eight rebounds, and one assist.

Cheska Apag contributed four points, while Mikka Cacho put up one as Gilas will face Australia later Saturday to decide which team will enter the quarterfinals as the top seed in Pool D.

Lesila Finau led Tonga, which will bow out of the tournament with a 0-2 record, with five points, Makeili Ika added three, and Kara and Ana Enari each had one.
