MANILA—Tenny Madis and Christian Papa were the biggest winners of the Palawan Open National Tennis Championships as they shared the spoils in four championships on the line over the weekend at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Madis, the Philippines' number two-ranked tennis player behind rising global star Alex Eala, won the women's singles title by beating veteran tennister Marian Capadocia, 6-2, 7-6 (5), on Sunday.
"Super galing si Ate Marian. Kailangan mo talaga ng 100 percent na focus," said Madis, who avenged her mixed doubles final defeat to Capadocia.
Madis teamed up with Ronard Joven, while Capadocia joined forces with fellow Filipino veteran Casey Alcantara.
Madis first struck gold by winning the women's doubles final along with fellow University of Hawaii-bound tennister Stefi Aludo against Kaye-Ann and Mica Emana.
On the other hand, Papa withstood the gallant fight from AJ Lim for a 6-4, 6-4 win in the men's doubles final later Sunday.
"It's been unbelievable. The people here are super kind. Filipino hospitality is something that everyone cares about. It's super grateful to be here," said the Filipino-American rising star, who played in this city for the first time ever.
Papa earlier teamed up with Alcantara in beating Eric Olivarez Jr. and Nilo Ledema, 7-6, 6-3, in the men's doubles final on Saturday night.
