MANILA—Gilas Pilipinas whipped Manawatu, 92-61, in the first of two tune-up games ahead of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers July window on Sunday at the Fly Palmy Arena in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

Defense was the key for Gilas in the game, as the team quickly grounded the Jets, even if the Philippine side went all-Filipino and gave Justin Brownlee the day off.

Carl Tamayo led Gilas with 14 points, while Kevin Quiambao added 13.

Kazlo Evans led Manawatu with 11 markers.

Supposed to be played on an afternoon in Palmerston North, the game became a primetime showdown as Gilas' flight to New Zealand was delayed by weather issues.

Despite the lack of preparation, Gilas still made quick work of the Jets as the Filipinos will now turn their attention to the Franklin Bulls on Tuesday.
