MANILA—The much-awaited second showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather is now in peril as Pacquiao himself confirmed that the rematch has been postponed.
Speaking to Lance Pugmire of Boxing Scene, Pacquiao said early Friday (Philippine Time) that the postponement stemmed from the ongoing dispute between Mayweather and CSI Sports Events.
CSI is the main organizer of Mayweather's supposed exhibition bout against fellow American boxing legend Mike Tyson.
However, the group filed a contract breach lawsuit against Mayweather after the former Olympic bronze medalist turned undefeated pro chose to immediately fight Mike Zambidis in another exhibition clash.
The said bout, supposed to take place in Greece on Sunday (Philippine Time), was also called off.
Mayweather is also dealing with other lawsuits this year, including some disputes over advanced payments to him.
The postponement of the rematch between Pacquiao and Mayweather came in line with the possibility that the exhibition bout between Mayweather and Tyson would be scheduled sometime just before the said date.
If both camps finally settle the lawsuit, CSI can set the Mayweather-Tyson showdown on Sept. 13 (Philippine Time), which would basically shelve the supposed Sept. 26 (Philippine Time) schedule for the Pacquiao-Mayweather 2.
According to Pacquiao, the rematch has been postponed indefinitely, but one possibility being floated around is to reschedule the bout to early 2027.
