TAGUIG CITY --- As Round 2 of the group stage of the ongoing World Cup concluded, the phase was regarded as a scoring party for top-flight players following crucial victories for their respective matches.
First, several teams have already assured their seats in the Round of 32.
Co-hosts the United States and Mexico secured their knockout spots after recording two straight wins against Australia and the Korea Republic, respectively, while fellow co-host Canada is highly likely to guarantee its Last 32 ticket as they face Switzerland later.
Four-time champions Germany are back in the knockout rounds following a win against debutants Curaçao and a late stoppage-time winner from Deniz Undav against the Ivory Coast.
Germany missed the Round of 16 in 2022 due to an inferior goal differential against Spain, with whom they shared identical win-draw-loss records.
France and Norway have also advanced to the knockout stage after picking up Group I wins against Iraq and Senegal, respectively, setting up an upcoming clash between the two sides.
Kylian MbappĂ© officially tied—and is poised to surpass—Miroslav Klose after scoring a brace against Iraq, bringing his total World Cup tally to 16 goals while Erling Haaland also netted twice to guide Norway past a dangerous Senegal squad in a thrilling 3-2 duel.
The two elite goalscorers will face off on Friday for leadership of Group I.
Defending champions Argentina will also proceed to the Round of 32 after landing their second victory in a 2-0 win over Austria, thanks to Lionel Messi, who scored a brace.
The Golden Ball winner and team captain increased his statistics to 18 World Cup goals, officially making him the FIFA World Cup's all-time top goalscorer after surpassing Klose.
Messi also currently leads this tournament's scoring charts with five goals so far, built on the back of his previous hat-trick against Algeria.
Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo joined the scoring party, redeeming himself after going scoreless against DR Congo on opening day.
The 41-year-old attacker scored twice in a 5-0 rout against debutants Uzbekistan, making him the first player to score in six different World Cups, stretching back to his tournament debut in 2006.
However, Colombia surpassed Portugal to top Group K following their victory against DR Congo, courtesy of a Daniel Muñoz goal in the 76th minute.
Haiti was the first team to be eliminated from the tournament, followed by TĂĽrkiye after an upset loss against Paraguay. Tunisia was also knocked out following a crushing 4-0 defeat against Japan, followed by Jordan and Panama.
Meanwhile, debutants Curaçao and Cape Verde have put themselves in an excellent position to secure their best-ever World Cup finishes following an impressive 0-0 draw against Ecuador and a 2-2 deadlock against two-time World Cup champions Uruguay, respectively.
Currently, Sweden, Scotland, Croatia, Algeria, Paraguay, Cape Verde, Belgium, and Czechia occupy the highlighted spots for the eight best third-placed teams, who will qualify for the Round of 32 alongside the top two teams from each group.
