MANILA—The wife of Ateneo men’s basketball coach Tab Baldwin has publicly spoken out following the drowning deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
In a video statement, Efi Baldwin said she wanted to distance herself and her children from Tab’s public references to his family.
“This video is because of his latest interview, and when he talks about his family, I want to make sure that he doesn’t represent me or my kids,” she said in a video posted by her legal counsel Tudor Clee on his X account on Saturday
Efi also claimed she left Baldwin in 2020 to protect herself and her children and alleged that she had repeatedly warned Ateneo officials about him.
“At that time, I repeatedly told Ateneo (De Manila) University that children are not safe around him, and it was their duty to remove him. I urged them to move him away from the university campus, and they proceeded to launch a campaign of intimidation and silencing,” she said.
Addressing the families of the two victims, Efi described the tragedy as both “predictable” and “preventable” while criticizing Baldwin’s recent remarks about moving forward from the incident.
“For Rovelyn and Elias, the deaths of your kids were not only predictable but preventable. The bodies of your kids are still warm, and he’s talking about moving on. That’s terrible, please believe me,” she added.
Efi also urged Filipinos and authorities to continue seeking answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
As of writing, neither Baldwin nor Ateneo de Manila University has publicly responded to the allegations made in the video.
