MANILA—Help quickly comes Meralco's way as the team deals with the injury to Jordon Varnado.
Team manager Paolo Trillo confirmed right after the Bolts' loss to the Phoenix Fuel Masters on Wednesday night, in which they were forced to play all-Filipino to not aggravate Varnado's injury, that Antonio Hester will be stepping in.
Varnado, though, will be placed on the injured list, which means Meralco can reactivate its BCL Asia import immediately once he is completely healed.
Head coach Luigi Trillo said that this is not the first time Varnado has joined the team hurt, as he was having some pains in his Achilles tendon during BCL Asia.
"He fought through in the BCL. He's our leading scorer. He's a character guy. His motor is always running. Ang problema ngayon, he goes at full speed," Trillo said, adding that they tried to minimize Varnado's pain for the past two days.
Trillo is expecting that Varnado will not see action "in the next three or four games," prompting the team management to inquire about Hester's availability.
Hester will arrive on Thursday and may quickly suit up for the Bolts against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Saturday night at the Ynares Center 1 in Antipolo.
The former Terrafirma and Magnolia import may get a chance to take one of his former teams as Meralco battles the Purefoods franchise on July 24 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
