TAGUIG—Alex Eala made quick work of American opponent Mary Stoiana with a 6-1, 6-2 win in a dominant start to her US Open campaign on Wednesday (Philippine Time) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City.
Eala started out red-hot by winning the first five games to draw to within one game of completing the Set 1 bagel.
Stoiana, who made the main draw through the qualifying rounds, averted the shutout by holding serve to take Game 6.
However, Eala could not be stopped in Game 7 to seal Set 1.
Stoiana momentarily got her game going by holding serve in two of the first three games in Set 2 to go up 2- 1.
However, Eala pulled away by winning the next five games, capping an uncommon moment of taking the first five games and the last five games of the match.
Up next for Eala is Oleksandra Olinykova.
Olinykova, who stunned Eala in the Strasbourg Open, eliminated Reese Brantmeier with a 6-4, 6-4 first-round win.
