MANILA—World number 18 Alex Eala kept her golden campaign alive while securing at least a bronze medal after fending off Chinese Taipei's Joanna Garland 7-5, 6-0 in the women’s singles quarterfinals of the 2026 Asian Games on Wednesday at the Nagoya City Higashiyama Park Tennis Center.
The top-seeded Filipino overcame a tightly contested opening set before finding another gear in the second, where she swept Garland without dropping a game to complete the straight-set victory.
Garland, the tournament's eighth seed and world number 143, immediately put Eala under pressure in the opening set, trading breaks with the Filipino as neither player managed to establish sustained control.
Eala eventually broke Garland to move ahead before holding serve in the next game to take the opening set.
The momentum shifted decisively in the second set as Eala raced to a 2-0 lead before breaking Garland again to stretch her advantage.
Garland struggled to find answers to Eala's aggressive returns and precise groundstrokes as the Filipino continued piling on the pressure.
Eala then broke to love for a 3-0 lead before holding serve to move within two games of the semifinal.
Even when Garland threatened to extend several games, Eala remained composed, answering with service winners and an ace before eventually pulling away.
The Filipino completed another break to reach 5-0, leaving Garland serving to stay in the match.
Eala then closed out the contest on her second match point after Garland sent a shot wide, sealing the 6-0 second set and the quarterfinal victory.
The result assured Eala of at least a bronze medal while keeping her bid for the Asian Games gold firmly intact.
The victory also continued Eala's strong start to the tournament after she opened her campaign with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over Thailand's Patcharin Cheapchandej in the second round.
Garland had likewise entered the quarterfinals in impressive form, sweeping Mongolia's Martaa Chogsomjav, 6-0, 6-0, before defeating Mandegar Farzami, 6-1, 6-1.
Now, with a medal already secured, Eala turns her attention to the semifinals and the next step in her gold-medal pursuit.
The top-seeded Filipino will face the winner of the quarterfinal clash between China's Wang Xiyu and Japan's Moyuka Uchijima.
