NCAA Finals Preview: Arellano vs. San Sebastian

By Rick Arlos

A longtime team looks to rebuild a dynasty, while a young squad continues its path to destiny. Arellano and San Sebastian collide in the NCAA women's volleyball finals beginning tomorrow at the FilOil Flying V Arena. Here are some things to consider for this series.

History: This is the first time the Lady Chiefs and the Lady Stags collide in the last dance. But in recent history, both teams have been bridesmaids to the Perpetual Help Lady Altas. Now that the Perps, who despite undergoing rebuilding the loss of their key players still made the semis, are out of the picture, it's time for both Arellano and Baste to shine.

What Now: In their recent meeting in the round-robin semis, the Lady Chiefs won in straight sets, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21. However, the Lady Stags threatened to at least extend the match after taking a 16-11 lead in Set 3, so they are no holdovers entering the best-of-3 finals.

Key Match-Up: Menchie Tubiera vs. Gretchel Soltones-Tubiera has taken over the Arellano squad with M.J. Ticar finishing up her playing years. Meanwhile, Soltones has done her role as San Sebastian's skipper. With both ladies leading the offensive charge, do expect the teams to focus on their spiking abilities.

Other Stats: Here's one thing to consider in both team's semis match: Coach Roger Gorayeb had another agenda that day as he was set to debut as NU's new coach in the UAAP. With the Lady Bulldogs taking a day off tomorrow, Gorayeb is free of any schedule conflict and will focus a lot on the Lady Stags this time.
