QUEZON CITY--On Tuesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, host KC Montero made a request to Justin Melton to dunk to further impress Damian Lillard, which Melton said yes.
However, while Melton was preparing for his high-flying stunt, Montero also reminded Lillard and the fans about Melton's funny dunk attempt at last year's PBA Slam Dunk Contest at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum.
Melton tried to do a blindfolded windmill dunk in the said contest only to miss it badly, drawing laughs from the fans at the said venue, the televiewers, and even the hoop junkies who saw the on-demand videos of the attempt which went viral worldwide.
"It's a prank dunk. Me and Joe Devance came up with it before the actual dunk contest. We just did it just to have fun. We didn't know it's gonna go viral," Melton revealed to Dugout Philippines the story behind the attempt.
Melton then confirmed that the try was inspired by Baron Davis' own blindfolded windmill dunk miss at the 2001 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
"We actually saw a video of Baron Davis doing it years back. Joe was like, 'Man, you should do this,' and I was like, 'Hmm... OK.' So we just did it, and it went viral and I still hear about it today," he continued.
On Tuesday night, however, the Star guard made sure there will be no epic fails as he smoothly soared for the exhibition slam off an assist from Alex Mallari, eventually delighting Lillard, who came to the Philippines as part of his Asian tour.
