RIO DE JANEIRO--Jasmine Alkhaldi made the top finishers in Heat 2 of the 100-meter freestyle swimming competition in the Rio Olympics on Thursday (Philippine Time).

Alkhaldi, playing in her second Olympiad, finished third with 56.3 seconds behind eventual race winner Susann Bjornsen of Norway (55.35) and runner-up Natthanan Junkrajang of Thailand (56.24).

However, the swim was not enough for Alkhaldi to land a spot in the semifinals as she was way out of the Top 16 overall at 33rd place, even failing to beat her personal best at 55.94 seconds, although she improved from her debut Olympic stint in 2012, where she clocked in 57.13.

The Philippine team is now down to five competitors hoping to add another medal to the silver won by Hidilyn Diaz in women's weightlifting on Monday.
