MANILA--Senator Sonny Angara expressed his demand for more sports facilities in barangays in line with his commitment to develop future sports stars in the grassroots level.
In a statement on Tuesday, the second-generation legislator said, "Regarding grassroots development, kailangan down to the barangay level mayroon tayong pasilidad.... We’ll have a healthier citizenry if we have sports facilities at the barangay level. I think, that should be one emphasis going forward.
"
He even shared the story of Singapore, which finally got an Olympic goal medal through Joseph Schooling's upset of Michael Phelps in swimming.
"Kung titingnan natin, a small country like Singapore, maliit lang ang espasyo nila pero meron silang yung tinatawag na building developments. Naka-integrate doon sa planning nila yung sports facilities, so each series of five tower blocks sa Singapore, meron silang swimming pool at gym, so it’s a lifestyle. That really means imbibing a lifestyle down to the barangay level," Angara stated.
He also said the people's health is a factor in his agenda to push through with the betterment of grassroots sports.
Angara explained, "Tingnan natin yung kalusugan ng ating mamamayan. Andaming namamatay sa lifestyle diseases. We see a lot of 40-year-olds dying from heart disease, diabetes and other lifestyle diseases. Hindi dapat mangyari yan kung merong sufficient exercise and wellness. So dapat, holistic yung pagtrato natin dyan sa problemang yan."
Angara was recently named the chairman of SBP, the national sports association for basketball.
