RIO DE JANEIRO--Rogen Ladon, the likeliest athlete to give the Philippines its first Olympic gold medal, is gone after his first boxing fight.
Ladon lost to Colombian opponent Yurbejen Martinez by unanimous decision in their light flyweight second round meeting on Monday.
Ladon automatically clinched a spot in the next round after drawing a bye, while Martinez needed to repulse home country favorite Patrick Lourenco to set up a date with Ladon.
However, the "extra match" proved to be helpful for Martinez as he once again became successful in his fight plan, dominating Ladon in the last two rounds, when the latter lost steam.
Two judges gave identical 29-28 cards, while a third gave Martinez a perfect 30.
Ladon's loss put to an abrupt end the Philippines' participation in the Olympic boxing event as Charly Suarez also lost in his first match, a split decision win by Joe Cordina.
