Merida, Gayoso: Frosh booters key to Ateneo's rout on Adamson

Ateneo's 4-0 rout of Adamson was largely credited to the freshmen, according to coach Jaypee Merida and Jarvey Gayoso

MANILA -- Ateneo zoomed ahead of the UAAP table with a comprehensive rout of Adamson yesterday evening, and this bode well for coach Jaypee Merida and forward Jarvey Gayoso when he talked to the football scribes at the Rizal Memorial.

But for him, he thinks that there is still a room to improve for the Blue Eagles, who only pulled away in the middle of the second half for the 4-0 beating of the Falcons.

"Gumanda lang siguro nung second half, they realized that they need to play as a team, as a unit", Merida said.

He added that the back-to-back losses in the title matches to UP last season and UST in Ang Liga recently lit the fire on them and stressed the importance of winning their opening fixture.

"Yung maganda nga ngayon dito, is yung daming na-add mga rookies. It's a good start for us to play in high intensity, ang ganda ng laro ng players," he said.

And speaking of the new additions, he lauded the nine freshmen that he fielded in the game, including five of them who started the match in which most of them are walk-on recruits, eventually tagged some of them that impressed Merida the most.

Gayoso echoed his mentor's statements, but warned his teammates not to let the guard down, even if it's just the first match of the season.

"It's nice to start the season very well, being on top of the table. But of course we should learn from it and we shouldn't be complacent about the positioning, and learn from the mistakes from our first game," the sophomore striker said, adding that he lauded AJ Jarcilla and Sam Lim as the freshmen that stand out in the game

Both Merida and Gayoso thanked the 12th man that showed up last night, and they are hoping that their numbers will increse when they defend their home at Moro Lorenzo against NU on Thursday.

"Very impressive community, daming support. Talagang isa sa mga dahilan kaya hyung mga boys naglaro ng highest," said the former Blue Booter who won the UAAP title both on the pitch and on the touchline.

"Well it's all about school spirit and of course, it's about the name in front rather than the back," Gayoso concluded.
