PASAY -- Coming off a from a pre-season triumph in Davao City, UST head coach Boy Sablan was surprised to hear the news that transferee Steve Akomo was deemed ineligible for the upcoming UAAP basketball tourney today.

"Nagulat ako, di ko alam. On the way na kami sa press conference nung lumabas na yung balitang yan," said the second-year mentor about the report by Spin.PH that the UAAP board did not clear the former UV Green Lancer for the 80th season along with UP's Ibrahim Quattara, citing the two-year residency rule for foreign athletes.

Sablan said that they will appeal the decision, before the Growling Tigers take on the Fighting Maroons in their season opener on Sunday.

It came at a questionable time when last season's cellar dwelling hosts took the Kadayawan plum in Davao City in the most bizarre circumstances.

"Blessing na sa amin yun, kasi yung turn of events masyadong mabilis ang pangyayari," Sablan replied, noting that their final preseason tilt was marred by a fracas between FEU and La Salle last August 25.
