Manila, Philippines - "Basketball is not forever" might be one of the the life quotes that former DLSU Green Archer Jerwin Gaco lived up to at the prime of his career in the sport. Now playing for the Davao Occidental Tigers and a doting father, Gaco made sure that his children won't experience what he experienced when he was growing up.
Through venturing into different investments, he is securing the future of his children, something that Gaco shared on his interview at The Ultimate Fan Hub Podcast, Thursday night.
"Ulila kasi ako so naranasan ko yung hirap kaya naging motivation ko na talagang mag-ipon para naman may maipundar ako," Jerwin opened up.
The idea to use his earnings and invest it into something profitable came from his Uncle who suggested that they build a 3-door apartment and have it rented.
Since he was earning that big while playing in the PBA, Jerwin saved up and used the money to heed on the suggestion of his Uncle. Not long after, Gaco also ventured into investing in condominium units and have it rented as well.
"Sa ngayon, meron akong apartment. Tatlong pinto yun saka yung tatlong condo. Lahat yun, katas ng sweldo ko sa PBA. Ayun, extra income para sa akin kasi pinapaupahan ko," Jerwin said
At this time of pandemic where sports leagues were forced to halt their season, Gaco is blessed that he can still sustain the needs of his family through his investments and savings. Not only that, he is also supportive of small-time businesses by using his influence and fan base, saying that this is the best time to support local products since the malls and other physical retail stores are in limited operations.
Jerwin uses his Facebook and Instagram pages to promote products that are being sold by his friends.
"Support local, syempre. Tulong na din yun sa mga kaibigan."
To be fair, Jerwin only promotes and endorses products that he has already tried and tested. These are ranging from Chili Garlic Paste, Dimsum and Clothing Line.
"Syempre kelangan nasusubukan muna bago natin ipinamamalita sa iba para alam ko naman kung ano yung ineendorse ko."
Despite being business savvy, Jerwin still aims that when the time comes that he really has to retire from playing the sport, he can still be useful in basketball in a different way.
"Gusto ko sana maging part ng coaching staff. Sa mga school, ganun pero hindi pa Head Coach, ha? Basta yung makakapag share ako ng skills na nalalaman ko about sa sport. Gusto ko din magturo ng basketball sa mga bata," Gaco explained.
