MAKATI—Davao Aguilas returned triumphantly to the PFL by beating Mendiola, 1-0, on Sunday night at the University of Makati Athletic Oval.
Ibrahim Ndour's goal made the difference as Davao, using the venue as their home for this season, began its campaign on a high note against Mendiola, which was fresh from a 7-0 beating of Air Force last week.
Kurt Talaroc found Ndour with some space inside the penalty box and sent his short cross toward him, and Ndour headed the ball past John Betanio's goal for the eventual go-ahead strike for Davao.
Betanio, though, had his moment in the 72nd minute when he saved Yusuke Unoki's penalty attempt that could have made it 2-0 for Davao.
However, Mendiola could not capitalize on the penalty save as the club could not replicate its offensive dominance over Air Force in their season opener.
