Meralco outplays ROS in virtual all-Filipino game in PBA Comm's Cup

MANILA--Meralco showed why it is after all the reigning PBA Philippine Cup champion, nipping debuting Rain Or Shine, 121-111, in a Commissioner's Cup game that went all-Filipino the rest of the way on Sunday night at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

Forced to play without Akil Mitchell for the remainder of the contest after he was hit in the face by Keith Datu just 11 seconds into the game, the Bolts' locals showed their might, opening a 33-25 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Elasto Painters, despite having to sit out Deon Thompson due to lack of a needed clearance, showed heart and cut the lead to three, 52-49, at halftime.

The game remained tight for most of the second half until crucial errors haunted ROS in the end.

Chris Newsome led Meralco, now 2-0 in the standings to join NorthPort and Hong Kong Eastern at the top, with 25 points, 21 in the first half, five rebounds, and one assist.

Bong Quinto added 20 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while Raymond Almazan chipped in 12 points, 16 rebounds, and two blocks.

Cliff Hodge imposed his will inside with 11 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and five blocks.

Datu finished with 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two blocks, while Jhonard Clarito contributed 13 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block for ROS.
