MANILA--Centro Escolar University is finally making the jump to the NCAA.
Well, sort of.
The Scorpions were announced on Tuesday as a guest team for the league's upcoming esports tournament, which will be sometime near the end of Season 101.
Although only for the esports event, CEU's participation in the NCAA is something 11 years in the making.
Then men's basketball team head coach Egay Macaraya revealed back in 2015 that the university once had an intent of joining the country's oldest collegiate league.
However, it was never disclosed how and why the membership talks fell out.
The NCAA was fresh from elevating Emilio Aguinaldo College and Lyceum's status that time to regular members.
At least for the esports tourney, CEU, whose basketball club led by former University of the East star Precious Momowei recently won the UCAL, will finally get a feeling of what it is like playing in the "grand old league".
The NCAA esports tournament will be a 12-team event as another guest college, Fatima, is joining as well.
This will be the second event this year that the league will welcome a guest team or two as University of Asia and Pacific will join the league's inaugural golf tournament as well.
However, this does not necessarily mean the NCAA is opening its doors for new members to come in.
According to a source, the league has set aside talks for a future expansion, which means the league's regular member schools will remain at 10 for the foreseeable future.
