QUEZON CITY—Rene Baterbonia’s high school coach Jess Evangelio said that he appreciated the sympathy his former player is getting after his tragic passing on Monday.

In a press conference on Friday in Davao City, the Ateneo De Davao University mentor expressed overwhelming gratitude on the support Baterbonia has received from basketball fans all over the country following the drowning incident of the six-foot-four forward and new Ateneo De Manila teammate Divine Adili in Dipaculao Aurora, during a team-building activity.

"Sobrang devastated, sobrang nasa-sad ako kasi nga iniisip ko kasi talaga yung parents ni Rene... Ang gusto lang talaga malaman ng family ni Rene is yung mga persons accountable, persons involved na ma-explain din ng maayos sa kanila kung ano talagang nangyari," Evangelio said.

He believes that an explanation from coach Tab Baldwin will grant peace on Rene and his family.

"We're waiting and hoping, praying na sana si coach Tab Baldwin makita namin or marinig namin na kausapin kahit private lang, makausap lang yung family ni Rene, yung parents ni Rene kasi it's the least that he can do," said Evangelio, a former high school teammate of PBA superstar Scottie Thompson.

Baterbonia's remains will stay in Ateneo De Davao University until Monday before they will be immediately transferred to his hometown of Talacogon, Agusan Del Sur.
