MANILA—The heavy monsoon rains that made some highways in Metro Manila not passable to vehicles prompted six collegiate teams to request for a rescheduling of their Pinoyliga Cup Monday games.
These include San Pedro College of Business Administration and College of St. Benilde, which was supposed to collide in a showdown that would decide Ateneo's next opponent in the US NCAA-like knockout preseason tournament.
Even the designated home team, New Era University, decided not to play Centro Escolar University in the nightcap of the games at the Iglesia Ni Cristo Central Recreation and Fitness Center in Quezon City.
The other game that Pinoyliga postponed was the duel between St. Clare and Holy Angel.
Only the showdown between Bestlink and University of Makati pushed through, although the supposed 10 a.m. tip-off was moved to 12 p.m. following the postponement of the St.Clare-Holy Angel game.
RJ Erum scored the buzzer-beater that sent the Herons to the Sweet 16 phase, giving them a 75-73 escape win against the Kalasag.
Erum led UMak with 17 points on 7 of 9 shooting, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while Aki Valina added 16 points, four rebounds, five assists, and one block.
Jeddy Dever led Bestlink with 13 points and four rebounds.
Pinoyliga said in a statement that it will announce the new playdates for the postponed games soon.
