QUEZON CITY—Wonju gave Strong Group Athletics a shock 110-79 whipping to open their William Jones Cup campaign on Friday at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei.
The KBL side quickly pulled away from the defending pocket tournament champion by opening a 28-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Wonju continued to pummel SGA as the game wore on until the Promy settled for a 31-point win.
Rayshaun Hammonds led Wonju with 25 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, and one steal, while Ethan Alvano and Li Song-Yu each added 21 points.
Alvano, the team's longtime Filipino-American reinforcement, went 7-for-12 from the field, while Li made all his 21 markers from three-point range, going 7-for-10.
Tajuan Agee led SGA with 21 points on 8-for-9 shooting, 10 rebounds, three assists, and one steal, but he committed six turnovers.
Boban Marjanovic, the three-peat-seeking club's prized Serbian recruit this year, was held to only six points and one rebound in 14 and a half minutes of action.
SGA will next face Japan, 66-70 loser to Chinese Taipei Blue later Friday, on Saturday.
Unlike the previous editions, teams from the same group will face each other twice in the preliminary round, with the top two teams entering the crossover semifinals.
SGA has a chance to get back at Wonju on Wednesday.
