MANILA—After consecutive days of settling for bronze medals plus one silver, the Philippines finally captured a gold medal in the Asian Games.
As anticipated by many, reigning Olympic floor exercise king Carlos Yulo won it all in his pet event, although Japanese foe Shoma Tsukiyama and Kazakh competitor Milad Karimi gave the Filipino champ a scare in the end.
Yulo, who was in the middle of the performance order, led the pack with 14.666 points, but Tsukiyama and Karimi, the last two gymnasts to compete, delivered relatively flawless performances to keep the wait for the elusive anxious.
In the end, though, despite getting 0.1-point bonuses, both Tsukiyama and Karimi fell short.
Tsukiyama, the penultimate performer, ended with the bronze after finishing with 14.566 points, while Karimi, who had the same difficulty points as Yulo at 5.7, took the silver with 14.6.
Yulo's younger brother Eldrew finished seventh with 12.233 points.
