MAKATI—A new MPL Philippines champion will be crowned this weekend as Aurora Gaming continued its impressive debut campaign with a 3-2 win against erstwhile holder Team Liquid Philippines in the first round of the postseason on Wednesday night at the Green Sun Hotel Ballroom.
In a best-of-five play-in showdown where a Suyou pick became vital, Aurora took a gamble of letting Karl Nepomuceno draft the new assassin-type hero in the deciding game and it paid off.
Although Nepomuceno successfully retributed the first turtle, he struggled the rest of the way as Jonard Caranto's Alpha, despite his own early slump, secured the rest of the objective bosses to slowly turn things around.
Domeng Del Mundo's Harith delivered the crucial kills in the late game for Aurora to eliminate Liquid PH, earning him Match MVP honors.
Aurora will now take on top-seeded Fnatic Onic Philippines in the upper bracket semifinals on Thursday night.
