MAKATI—Team Rest of the World finally got over the hump of Team Asia and claimed its first Reyes Cup championship on Sunday night, clinching it with a dominant display at the Makati Coliseum.

Up 9-4 13 matches in, Team ROW wasted no time in winning the two needed matches to clinch the title, starting with the 5-on-5 battle wherein the quintet of Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, Aleksa Pecelj, Joshua Filler, Shane Van Boening, and Fedor Gorst raced to a 4-2 lead before clinching Match 14 in eight racks.

Sanchez Ruiz and Van Boening then made the most out of a rare tandem before they square off in the Mosconi Cup next month as Team Europe and Team USA's main guns, respectively, by dominating the tandem of Hong Kong-based Filipino sensation Robbie Capito and Vietnamese star Duong Quoc Hoang 5-1 in the eventual closeout match to seal Team ROW's overall victory.

Sanchez Ruiz, who was undefeated in the singles and doubles matches he played during the four-day tournament, was named the Reyes Cup MVP.

Action shifts to the Gateway 2 Quantum Skyview in Quezon City for the Philippine Open starting Tuesday, wherein all the Reyes Cup participants plus some other Filipino and international billiard stars will try to dethrone David Alcaide as the champ.
